How to use it
- Add your business. Your name, address and GSTIN; only the supplier who issued the original invoice issues the credit note. Details saved in the invoice generator on this browser are filled in for you.
- Add the customer. The same buyer as on the original invoice: name, address and GSTIN if registered. For an unregistered buyer, pick the State.
- Link the original invoice. Type the original invoice number and date. Rule 53(1A)(g) asks for them; for one note against several invoices, separate the numbers with commas.
- Pick the reason and add the lines. Goods returned, value or GST charged too high, deficient goods or an agreed discount. Add only the returned quantity or the reduced value, with the same HSN and GST rate as the invoice.
- Print or save. Print two copies (Original for recipient, Duplicate for supplier), or save as PDF or Excel. Report the note in your GSTR-1 for the month it is issued.

Use the same HSN and GST rate as the original line, even if the rate has changed since: the credit note reverses that invoice. More on the rules in credit note in GST: meaning and format, and for counter returns from walk-in buyers, sales return and credit note for B2C customers.

Questions
What is the format of a credit note under GST?
Rule 53(1A) of the CGST Rules lists it: supplier name, address and GSTIN; nature of the document (Credit note); a serial number of up to 16 characters, unique for the financial year; date of issue; recipient name, address and GSTIN or UIN if registered, or name, address, delivery address and State with code if unregistered; serial numbers and dates of the original invoices; taxable value, tax rate and tax credited; and a signature.
When can a supplier issue a GST credit note?
Section 34(1) of the CGST Act allows it when the taxable value or tax on an invoice was more than it should have been, when the buyer returns the goods, or when goods or services are found deficient. A discount after the sale reduces value only if it was agreed at or before the time of supply and is linked to the invoices, as Section 15(3)(b) sets out.
What is the last date to issue a credit note?
Section 34(2) says the credit note must be declared in the return for the month it is issued, and not later than 30 November following the end of the financial year of the supply, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. For a sale made in 2025-26, that is 30 November 2026 at the latest.
Can I make one credit note for several invoices?
Yes. Since 1 February 2019, Section 34(1) allows one or more credit notes for supplies made in a financial year, and Rule 53(1A)(g) asks for the serial numbers and dates of the corresponding invoices. Type the invoice numbers separated by commas in the Original invoice number box.
Does a credit note reduce my GST liability?
Usually, yes, for the month in which you report it. The proviso to Section 34(2) says the supplier cannot reduce output tax if a registered buyer who took input tax credit has not reversed it, or, in other cases, if the tax was passed on to someone else. Your CA will check this when filing.
Is a credit note the same as a sales return slip?
A sales return slip or exchange voucher is an internal shop record. A GST credit note is the tax document that reverses the value and GST of the original invoice. For walk-in customers, see the guide on sales returns and credit notes for B2C bills.
What is the difference between a credit note and a debit note?
A credit note lowers the value or tax of an earlier invoice (Section 34(1)); a debit note raises it when the value or tax charged was too low (Section 34(3)). A debit note includes a supplementary invoice.
